Tsakani’s Nonty Mthombeni breaks barriers in banking and modelling

Nontokozo Mthombeni, a Universal Banker from Tsakani, is making waves in both the finance and fashion industries — and she’s just getting started.

Tsakani – Nontokozo ‘Nonty’ Mthombeni is a universal banker for a financial institution while also pursuing her passion as a model.

She grew up in Tsakani and said growing up in a close-knit township community shaped her into the individual she is today.

“From a young age, I have always been a go-getter. I was actively involved in organisations that worked with young people, such as Love Life, when I was still in high school.

“Later, when I moved to tertiary level, I joined an amazing organisation called Gap-Bridging that worked with high school learners across the country.

“That experience taught me the importance of working hard for opportunities and using my voice in spaces that matter,” explained Mthombeni.

“Being raised by supportive parents, especially my mother, and a close-knit community taught me the value of teamwork and helping others. Those experiences continue to influence how I approach challenges.”

Mthombeni stays positive, resourceful, and focused on solutions.  She said she is excited to continue using those values to grow her career in both banking and modelling, while inspiring others from similar backgrounds to believe in themselves.

She became interested in modelling at a young age.

“Growing up in Tsakani, I did not often see people from communities like mine represented in fashion or media. But I was always fascinated by the creativity and confidence that modelling expressed. At first, it was more of a curiosity; friends and family would often encourage me, saying I had the look and presence for it.

“The real turning point came when I had the opportunity to do an outdoor photo shoot for a friend’s company as he was expanding his brand and asked me to model,” she explained.

That experience gave Mthombeni a true taste of the industry and showed her that modelling is not just about appearances; it is about discipline, confidence, and storytelling through expression. From that moment, she knew she wanted to pursue it seriously and seek more opportunities.

She was recently selected to collaborate with HerMajesty by DJ Zinhle as a model for the brand’s hair collection. The collaboration came about when the brand announced on Instagram that they were looking for two models.

“I did not see the post myself at first; a good friend of mine noticed it and encouraged me to comment with my Instagram handle so they could view my profile. I am grateful she did, because that is how I became part of the search.

“When I found out I had been chosen, I honestly could not believe it. HerMajesty by DJ Zinhle is such a respected brand, and being considered felt both humbling and exciting.

“What made it even more surreal was being chosen alongside a model who was already well-known with a large following. It truly felt like a dream come true,” she expressed.

Mthombeni said her selection confirmed that small beginnings should never be underestimated. She added that consistency and faith do pay off. She described working with DJ Zinhle’s team as an incredible experience.

“They are not only professional but also very supportive, which made me feel valued and comfortable from the start. Representing such a respected brand is empowering. It reminds me how far I’ve come and the doors that can open when you keep believing in yourself.

“It is also inspiring to be part of a brand that stands for confidence and empowerment, which aligns with my own journey. For me, it is more than modelling; it is being part of a bigger vision that motivates other young women to dream bigger,” Mthombeni said.

As a young woman from a township, one of her biggest challenges in modelling was access to opportunities. She hopes her journey serves as a testimony to other girls in Tsakani and similar communities that no dream is too big.

“I want them to see that even if opportunities feel far away, with resilience, faith, and consistency, you can create a path for yourself. Small beginnings matter, whether it is a local photo shoot, a school activity, or simply believing in yourself when no one else does.

“If I have made it this far, they can too. I hope my story inspires them to chase their dreams with confidence and start exactly where they are,” she advised.

She also acknowledged that some opportunities come through knowing people who recognise your potential. Her message to young people dreaming of a career in fashion or modelling is to never wait for the ‘perfect moment.’

“Start with what you have and where you are. Put yourself out there. Small beginnings count, and every experience can become a stepping stone.

“Be consistent, stay true to yourself, and do not compare your journey to anyone else’s, especially on social media. If you show up with passion and dedication, the right doors will open,” she concluded.
