From Tsakani to the screen: ‘Pressure’ captures township dreams and struggles
Savage Sossa’s ‘Pressure’ tells the story of ambition, survival, and resilience in Tsakani. In the heart of Tsakani, a new South African film, Pressure, is capturing the raw realities of township life.
In the heart of Tsakani, a new South African film, Pressure, is capturing the raw realities of township life. The film, produced by Thamsanqa Nogaga, aka Savage Sossa, proves that dreams are expensive and survival is a full-time job.
“Sindi, a young and gifted singer, refuses to let her circumstances bury her voice. With her son, Zweli, as her only anchor, she fights to rise above a world filled with abuse, betrayal, and broken promises.
“But Sthembiso, her once-trusted lover, is determined to crush her dreams. Violent, manipulative and haunted by his past, he drags her deeper into the chaos of township life.
“As Sindi battles to hold onto hope, Zweli becomes the innocent victim of the recklessness around them; a tragedy that forces her to make impossible choices.
“Caught between corrupt cops, hustlers who exploit her talent, and a music industry that promises the world but delivers nothing, Sindi must find the courage to claim her destiny before the pressure destroys her completely.
”When the pipes burst, only the strongest survive,” explained Savage.
He started writing the film in March 2023.
“It wasn’t planned as a ‘big movie’ at first; it was just me feeling that there was a gap in how our stories are told.
“Over time, it grew into something bigger than I even imagined, rooted in Tsakani, in the life around me, in the pressure we live through daily,” he added.
Savage said the inspiration for Pressure came straight from the township.

“From the struggles and the hustle, from mothers fighting for their kids, from dreamers who want a way out, and from the dark realities of abuse, crime, and corruption that surround us. Sindi’s story speaks for so many young women I’ve seen in the kasi: ambitious, fiery and determined to break cycles.
“Pressure isn’t just about one character; it’s about us, our communities, our pain and our hope.”
He said that through the movie, he wants people to feel seen.
“I want them to recognise themselves, their families, their streets. I want them to see that even with limited resources, we can create something powerful.
“I hope that Pressur inspires the next kid in the kasi, that they say, ‘If Sossa can do it from Tsakani with just a phone, then I can do it too’. That’s the fire that keeps me going,” he said.
