SAPS, CPF host event to address rising suicide rates among officers

In response to a surge in suicides among police officers, the Tsakane SAPS and the CPF hosted a mental health event aimed at breaking the silence and encouraging open conversations in the community.

Tsakani – The Tsakane SAPS and the CPF recently hosted a mental health awareness event due to the rise of suicides among police officers.

The initiative aimed to break the stigma around mental health and encourage open dialogue among men.

Residents, healthcare professionals and representatives from various organisations shared valuable information, resources and support systems available to those with mental health issues.

“Many police officers face traumatic incidents paired up with personal issues, which they never verbalise.

“The aim was to bring men together and give them the platform to verbalise the things they hardly talk about while getting information on where they could seek help,” explained CPF chairperson Mncedisi Somyo.

“Early intervention, emotional well-being and community-based support are important. Mental health challenges can contribute to social issues, such as substance abuse, domestic violence and crime. Collective awareness can play a vital role in prevention.”

The event’s guest speakers encouraged community members to look out for one another and report any concerns regarding mental health to the appropriate services, reinforcing the idea that mental wellness is a shared responsibility.

By prioritising mental health education and support, the Tsakane SAPS and the CPF continue to strengthen community relations and promote a safer, more compassionate society.
