From ink to beats: Savage Sossa redefines township art through music, film, and tattoos

Musician, tattooist, and filmmaker thamsanqa “Savage Sossa” Nogaga channels township life into powerful creative expression that heals, inspires, and empowers.

KWA-THEMA – Thamsanqa Nogaga (42), popularly known as Savage Sossa, is a multidisciplinary artist whose work spans tattooing, music, directing, and entrepreneurship, representing the creativity and resilience of the township.

“My stage name reflects both sides of my personality: the relentless drive to survive and create (Savage), and the grounded, soulful energy rooted in my African identity (Sossa),” he explained.

“My origins have shaped who I am, from my hustle to my sound. The stories, struggles, and energy of the township are at the heart of everything I create, whether it is music, tattoos, or film,” he added.

Thamsanqa believes creativity has been part of him from the start. Music, visuals, and storytelling have always been his outlet, eventually evolving into tattoos, music, and film as different forms of expression sharing one message.

“Musically, I blend hip-hop, township soul, and conscious street poetry, a style that carries both emotion and grit.

“My inspiration comes from real life and people, the pressure, and perseverance of my community. I create to heal, inspire, and reflect the township experience authentically,” he said.

He is motivated by survival, purpose, and legacy.

“Coming from an environment with limited opportunities, I wanted to create a life that spoke to freedom financially, emotionally, and creatively.

“Art became my way to give back through tattoos that help people reclaim their stories, music that reflects real struggles, and visuals that inspire others to dream bigger. Everything I do transforms hardship into hope.”

Thamsanqa credits his mother for inspiring his musical journey.

“She was in a church choir, and I would go with her as a child, absorbing the emotion and energy of music. Later, I joined a school choir, which taught me rhythm and discipline.

“But it was in high school that I discovered I could rap. During lunch breaks, we would freestyle, and I realised music was not just enjoyment, it was my purpose,” he said.

He admires artists who tell real stories, maintain authenticity, and build cross-medium careers, blending creativity with entrepreneurship while representing township culture to wider audiences.

Savage Sossa has collaborated with artists including Thami Durbz, Thibe Da King, Book Of Life, and Bongo Riot (formerly of Gang of Instrumentals).

He has also edited and directed music videos for multiple artists under Real Recognise Reel. His notable works include Cold Climates, part of Magnum Opus, and the music video Style Sam, which aired on Trace and other major TV channels, giving him national exposure.

He is currently working on a movie titled Pressure, written and filmed entirely on a phone, telling raw township stories of struggle, choices, and survival.

“I am also working on my album Magnum Opus, made possible through the SAMRO Music Creation Fund. The album reflects my journey, community, and personal growth, telling authentic stories,” he concluded.
