Young Tsakani photographer Nqobile Kraai champions township talent through his camera lens

At just 21, Nqobile Kraai is using sports photography to shine a spotlight on overlooked talent in Kwatsaduza’s township leagues.

Tsakani – Nqobile Kraai (21) is a passionate sports photographer whose aim is to make a name for himself.

His passion started when he was in his second year at UJ. Kraai volunteered on a sports account named Bluescore FC.

“Katlego Sathekge is the founder of the account I volunteered for. I was playing soccer at UJ, but one day I joined him in sports photography, and that is where it all started.

“I started falling in love with sports photography after volunteering for weeks,” he explained.

Kraai cited that the lack of sports coverage inspired him to focus on the field. He emphasised that in townships, no one exposes the talent of young boys who attend every game at the Kwa-Thema Sports Complex and in all sporting areas in Kwatsaduza.

“I took it upon myself that there is a person who must expose the talent in the township, and I fill the gap.

“I started photographing resident leagues in 2024, and in November 2025, I created my own social account, Tap-In FC. I have also managed to capture legendary matches such as the Soweto Derby at FNB Stadium.

“Doing what I love is what keeps me motivated. The positive messages from people complementing our work has had a good impact on us,” he added.

He cited that he also does photography as a way of motivating the players.

“Every morning when I wake up and go out to photograph sports, I remind myself why I started. I believe I have been given this gift to shine a light on others, especially players who rarely get the exposure they deserve.

“Even when there is no money involved, I still show up, because I know what visibility can mean for a young athlete trying to be seen, to be signed, and to one day play for professional teams,” he emphasised.

For Kraai, photography and videography carry purpose and priceless memories. He also highlighted that, although finances are not part of his role, players need exposure so they can pursue their dreams of playing for professional teams.

Despite challenges, Kraai has covered several notable events, including the Hollywoodbets Champ of Champs, the Nomndayi Tournament, the Spring LFA League, and various school cluster leagues.

“I have covered the biggest derby in Africa, which was one of my dreams to share the pitch with professional players.

“The journey has been great since I started, despite the challenges I have encountered before.

“My dream is to own a media company, where I have the same account, covering different provinces and leagues, both amateur and professional leagues.

“My biggest dream is to also capture overseas sports one day, leagues like the Premier League, Serie A, Bundesliga, and La Liga,” he added.

He encourages other young people to follow their dreams, do what they love, and always follow their hearts.
