Ekurhuleni has found itself in the spotlight under disturbing circumstances, after the bodies of nine women were found in the region in just two months.

Six of the nine women remain unidentified.

It is not yet clear whether these cases are linked as investigations are still ongoing, however, the SAPS have not ruled out the possibility of a serial killer.

Duduza SAPS social crime prevention coordinator and communications officer Constable Nobuhle Mnisi urges all women to take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.

She cited the following safety tips:

• Do not jog or walk alone in isolated areas.
• Join running clubs, exercise in groups and join lift clubs to avoid traveling or walking alone.
• Always share your location with someone you trust.
• Avoid entertaining strangers unnecessarily.
• Stay alert and always be aware of your surroundings.
• Avoid hitchhiking.
• When using e-hailing services, share your trip with someone you trust.
• Avoid travelling at night or in isolated areas alone.

“Remember, if something seems or looks suspicious, it probably is.

“Let’s stay alert, stay safe, constantly check on your loved ones and avoid showing up alone,” she said.

Mnisi urged residents to report missing family members.

Families with missing loved ones are urged to contact Germiston SAPS to verify if one of the unidentified women may be their missing relative.

She further urged community members to work closely with the police to find the families of the unidentified women.
