Alberton wrestler shines at the African Continental Championship

Alberton Wrestling Club wrestler Shaun de Kock recently competed in the U20 category at the African Continental Championship in Alexandria, Egypt, coming home with a bronze medal.

The African Continental Championship U20 competitions took place in March, and this is where Shaun de Kock showed his medal.

This young champion was among the 12 wrestlers representing SA in Egypt.

“The matches are much more technical than we are used to in SA, and the officials were strict. The wrestlers are a level above what we wrestle against daily at our tournaments, and every match felt like a final,” said De Kock.

De Kock said this was a great experience to learn from and improve, see how other countries work, and identify what he needs to improve in his wrestling.

He started wrestling at age four at the Alberton Wrestling Club. He won two SA youth titles and received his SA U17 colours in 2021.

In 2023, he won the SA Presidents titles in freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling and his SA U20 colours.

He has also represented SA at the African Continental Championship in Tunisia and won the SA U20 Greco-Roman titles.

“Shaun has grown to become a strong-willed and dedicated young man. As his coach, I am proud to be a part of his journey and look forward to seeing how he will set up in the senior division,” said his coach, Richard Adinall.
