Lights out for cable thieves in New Market
The arrest comes after CPS Security chased the suspects, who had escaped on Thursday but were caught yesterday.
Two suspects were arrested yesterday for stealing traffic light cables on Ring Road in New Market, putting an end to a series of cable thefts that have plagued the area in recent weeks.
CPS Security director Tyrone van der Merwe confirmed that several traffic lights had been vandalised, and cables were stolen during the past few weeks.
“Our team has been working during the early hours of the morning to apprehend the perpetrators,” he said.
According to Van der Merwe, the suspects were first spotted cutting traffic light cables early on Thursday morning.
“Our team gave chase, but they managed to escape into the South Crest Koppie,” he said.
Van der Merwe said yesterday morning, the suspects were seen once again on Ring Road in New Market, cutting yet another traffic light. Quick action was taken, and a backup team was called to assist in the operation.
“The suspects were swiftly apprehended, and cutting tools, stolen cables, and other items were found in their possession,” he said.
The Alberton SAPS were contacted, and the suspects were handed over for further investigation.
