Alberton mourns security officer killed by suspected drunk driver
Loved ones bid a tearful farewell to Ryno van Vuuren, a dedicated CPS officer tragically killed while on duty.
Family, friends, colleagues, and community members gathered in solemn tribute at Hoërskool Dinamika on May 16 to say their final goodbyes to Ryno van Vuuren, a CPS Security officer.
Ryno was tragically killed earlier this month in a fatal car crash involving a suspected drunk driver.
The 29-year-old officer lost his life on the night of May 3, while on patrol in Alberton North.
A vehicle, allegedly driven by an intoxicated motorist, is believed to have sped through a red traffic light and collided with Ryno’s CPS-marked patrol car.
A Fidelity ADT vehicle was also involved in the crash; its driver was hospitalised and later discharged on May 6.
The devastating loss has left a deep void in the hearts of those who knew and loved Ryno.
During the moving memorial service, his brothers, Hannes and Jacques van Vuuren, honoured their brother’s memory, describing him as a gentle giant and the pillar of strength in their family following the death of their father.
“Ryno was more than just our brother. He was our rock, our laughter, and our protector. We’ll miss the Ryno braais, our nightly chats, and his boundless generosity,” said the brothers, fighting back emotions.
Heartfelt tributes marked the service, none more poignant than those from his fiancée, Brittany Sargeant, who spoke of her unbearable grief.
“The moment I received the news, it felt as though my soul was torn from my body. Ryno was my everything, and life without him feels impossible,” she said.
CPS Security’s Tyrone van der Merwe described Ryno as a devoted and valued team member.

“He wasn’t just a colleague but part of our family. His dedication and kindness left a lasting impression on everyone,” Tyrone said.
Following the crash, the suspected driver and his passenger fled the scene on foot.
Thanks to a swift joint effort by CPS Security and Alberton SAPS, the driver was soon apprehended and now faces several charges, including culpable homicide, driving under the influence of alcohol, and defeating the ends of justice.
In the wake of this tragedy, the Van Vuuren family has issued a heartfelt plea for stronger measures against drunk driving. They are calling for tougher laws, more roadside checks, and increased public education on the dangers of driving under the influence.
“Let Ryno’s death serve as a turning point,” said his mother, Joyce.
As the Alberton community grieves the loss of a man remembered for his warmth, loyalty, and unwavering service, those closest to Ryno are determined to see his legacy become a force for change.
“Ryno’s life mattered. We will continue to speak out and fight to ensure that his tragic death leads to awareness and action,” Ryno’s brothers concluded.
