Quick response leads to arrest of ATM card scammers in Brackendowns

Swift teamwork between CPS Security and Brackendowns SAPS led to the arrest of two suspects caught attempting to defraud an elderly man at a local shopping centre ATM.

Two suspected card scammers were arrested on November 11, after an attempted fraud incident at a local shopping centre was swiftly foiled by CPS Security officers.

According to CPS Security, their control room received panic alerts from the shopping centre after two men attempted to defraud an elderly gentleman at an ATM.

Responding immediately, officers intercepted the suspects’ vehicle in the parking area, seized the car keys and detained both men.

During a search of the vehicle, officers discovered two FNB card machines concealed in the roof lining.

Further investigation revealed that the number plates had been removed, a tactic commonly used to avoid identification.

Authorities confirmed that the suspects are believed to be linked to similar card-fraud incidents in Sandton, Sinoville and Olievenhoutbosch.

The getaway vehicle used in the operation was reportedly a hired car.

The suspects were handed over to the Brackenhurst SAPS, where they now face charges relating to attempted fraud and other ongoing cases.

CPS Security director, Tyrone van der Merwe, praised his team for their swift response and professionalism.

“Our officers acted quickly and decisively to protect a vulnerable member of the public. Their vigilance and teamwork not only prevented a crime in progress but also helped link these suspects to other similar cases across Gauteng,” he said.

Van der Merwe added that incidents of ATM card fraud continue to be a concern in the area.

“We urge residents to stay alert when withdrawing cash and to report any suspicious behaviour immediately. Community awareness and prompt reporting make all the difference in fighting these crimes,” he said.

CPS Security extended its thanks to Brackendowns SAPS for their assistance in the operation, reaffirming their shared commitment to keeping the community safe.
