Concerns raised as criminals in Eden Park target learners walking to school

Criminals are targeting learners going to Eden Ridge, Greenfields Secondary, and other local schools to rob them of their belongings.

Concerns are being raised after a spike in crime affecting learners who walk to local schools in and around the Eden Park area. Learners are said to be targeted by criminals and robbed of their belongings.

A Facebook post from a resident in Eden Park started a conversation about learner safety. “We have a problem, and it has been a while now. Next to Wynkwaard Street are churches where kids from Eden Ridge, Greenfields and Palm Ridge Secondary school pass, and are targeted and get robbed. My daughter and her friends were chased by a guy with a knife next to the churches,” wrote the concerned parent.

The shocking incident is said to have taken place near the Witnesses of God church on Wynkwaard Street in Eden Park.

Here are tips that learners in Eden Park can use to reduce the risk of being robbed:

• Walk in groups whenever possible because criminals usually target learners who are alone.

• Carry only what you need for school. Avoid extra cash or valuables.

• Keep phones hidden (inside a bag, not pockets).

• Do not walk while using a phone or wearing earphones, and stay alert.

• Stick to busy routes with people, shops, or taxis – even if it is longer.

• Avoid shortcuts, open fields, or quiet areas near bushes, churches, or empty buildings.

• Be aware of your surroundings: notice who is ahead of or behind you.

• If something feels wrong, turn back or cross the street.

• Do not argue or resist if threatened – your life is more important than possessions.

• Avoid showing fear, but also avoid staring or challenging suspicious people.

• Learn safe escape points along the route (shops or houses).

• Parents should organise walking groups or rota supervision for learners.

• Community members should report loitering criminals to Eden Park SAPS or the local CPF.

• Encourage learners to report incidents immediately, even if nothing was stolen.

• Memorise important phone numbers (parents, CPF members, or police).

• If chased, run towards people, traffic, or shops, and shout loudly.

According to Crime Hub, an organisation known for studying crime statistics, Eden Park SAPS recorded 274 cases of robbery with aggravating circumstances in 2024 alone. Statistics for cases recorded at Eden Park SAPS are yet to be released.
