Days after being elected as chairperson, Alberton taxi boss shot dead

Richard Madonsela, recently elected as the chairperson of the Greater Alberton Taxi Association was shot dead on February 14.

The Greater Alberton Taxi Association (GATA) is mourning the death of its chairperson, Richard Madonsela, who was shot and killed on February 14.

Madonsela was declared chairperson in early February after an election at the Bracken Park Community Hall in Brackenhurst, Alberton.

His killing took place on Saturday in Thokoza.

Madonsela was driving a GATA vehicle. Sources told the Alberton Record he had just stepped out of the vehicle when he was shot.

“He was driving the GATA Corolla when the incident took place. One suspect approached Madonsela after he exited the vehicle and shot him. He was rushed to a nearby clinic, where he was declared dead. It looks like he died on the spot because clinic health workers told the people dropping Madonsela off that he had already died,” said a source who preferred not to be named.

Madonsela acted as the chairperson for six months prior to being officially elected in February.

“He was in our church and was a kind man. When our congregants travelled for church activities, he would charge us less. If the fare cost R300, he would charge us a mere R150 for petrol. That was the type of person he was,” said another source.

The SAPS is investigating Madonsela’s killing.
