WATCH: Community mourns Eden Park shooting victims

The Eden Park community mourned the loss of three men killed in a shocking shooting, as funerals brought friends, family, and neighbours together to honour their memory.

The funeral services for the murdered Eden Park trio were held in Eden Park and Roodepoort on June 28 and 29.

The service for Eden Park’s passionate car spinner, Eric Maswaya, was at JD Thomas Hall. Late brothers Shane and Clayton Abrahams had their funeral service at the Roodepoort Town Hall.

The trio died on June 19 in a shooting that left many Eden Park community members astonished. The brothers and Eric were gunned down at a house on Rambler Road.

It is understood that an unknown number of suspects entered Abrahams’ home, allegedly armed with an AK-47. Inside, they found Shane, brother Clayton, Eric and a fourth unidentified person.

Multiple shots were fired, killing the three men and leaving the fourth critically injured and hospitalised. The suspects fled in a getaway vehicle and remain at large.

The Abrahams brothers were laid to rest in the Westpark Cemetery, Beyers Naudé Drive, Randburg, while Eric was buried in the Kromvlei Cemetery, Randwaterboard Road, Alberton.

Eric’s funeral drew a large crowd from the community, including church and community leaders, car spinners from Alberton and nearby areas and the public.

Some mourners wore T-shirts showing Eric standing at his favourite place – the car spinning track. His coffin was then carried outside and placed in a circle just outside the gate of the JD Thomas Hall. There, a fellow car spinner honoured him by spinning in circles as the crowd cheered.

Statement from the Maswaya family:

We, the Maswaya family, thank the Eden Park community for your patience during the funeral arrangements, especially with all the spinning and noise.

We appreciate the respect shown and thank everyone who came out to salute Eric when we drove through the streets of Eden Park. Your support moved us deeply.

To everyone who helped prepare food, contributed financially or sent tins of biscuits and coffee – thank you.

We thank Clr Dino Peterson and minister Gayton MacKenzie for all they did for our family. We are grateful to the aunties who took roses from their gardens to place on Eric’s coffin during his send-off, to the neighbours, and to the young men who came out in numbers each morning to clean the streets after the spinning.
