Brackendowns CPF warns residents as cellphone thefts rise

Residents are warned to be extra cautious after a spike in cellphone snatchings put victims at risk of fraud and identity theft.

Residents are warned to take extra precautions following a recent spike in cellphone snatchings in busy areas.

Criminals target individuals by grabbing phones straight from their hands, lifting them from open handbags or taking them from back pockets, often without the victim realising until it’s too late.

Double the risk: Identity theft and financial fraud

Many victims have reported that their cellphones were stolen along with crucial personal information.

Many carry their bank cards, ID or driving licence inside their phone cases, making them a prime target for fraud. Once stolen, criminals use these items to access bank accounts or commit identity theft.

CPF’s top tips to stay safe:

• Avoid openly using your phone in crowded or high-traffic public areas;

• Do not keep your phone in your back pocket; it is an easy target;

• Never leave your phone visible inside your car, even for a moment;

• Keep your bank cards, ID and other personal documents separate from your cellphone;

• Enable tracking services like Find My iPhone or Find My Device;

• If your phone was stolen, immediately contact your bank to freeze any connected cards.

A single moment of distraction can lead to a significant loss

Brackendowns CPF urges people to remain cautious and share this message with friends, family and neighbours to help protect others in the community.
