Despite worrying crime patterns in Alberton, residents have little interest in CPF meetings
The most common acts of crime in Alberton are robbery with aggravating circumstances, commercial crimes, burglary at residential premises, and theft of motor vehicle or motorcycles, among others.
The CPF has raised concerns over poor turnout at its meetings.
Despite worrying crime patterns in Alberton, residents show little to no interest in CPF meetings and other crime intervention efforts.
In 2024 alone, there were 4 803 crimes reported at two of Alberton’s main police stations: Alberton SAPS and Brackendowns SAPS. Topping the list were robbery with aggravating circumstances, commercial crimes, burglary at residential premises, and theft of motor vehicles or motorcycles, among others.
“Attendance at our sector meetings has been very poor,” said Brackendowns CPF in a statement. “These meetings are for you, the community. They provide updates on crime trends and statistics in our area, as well as valuable safety tips to help prevent crime before it happens. Sadly, many residents only reach out for information after they have become victims.”
Residents of Alberton are encouraged to attend CPF meetings, which take great effort to organise and could help reduce crime trends in the area. “If attendance does not improve, we will have no choice but to cancel these meetings and WhatsApp groups, as continuing with such low engagement is not a good use of resources,” added Brackendowns CPF.
Meeting schedule:
Sector 1 – first Wednesday of every month
Sector 2 – second Wednesday of every month
Sector 3 – third Wednesday of every month
All sectors meeting – last Wednesday of every month
In September, the all sectors meeting will be combined with the Sector three meeting on September 17 due to a public holiday on September 24.
