URCSA Eden Park celebrated 15 years of ministry
The URCSA Eden Park minister reflects on faith, personal loss and the support of his congregation and family as he marks the milestone.
Reverend KJ Mekoa has celebrated his 15th anniversary in ministry at the Uniting Reformed Church in Southern Africa (URCSA) Eden Park, marking a milestone of faith and perseverance.
Ordained minister in October 2011, Mekoa reflected on a journey shaped by personal loss and his congregation’s support. Under the theme ‘Sola Gratia’ (by grace alone), the anniversary recognised 15 years of service, family and congregation.
“The journey has not been easy. God prepared me before my ordination as minister of URCSA Eden Park in October 2011,” Mekoa said in his anniversary message. He reaffirmed the Five Solas of the Reformation, which he said had sustained him throughout his journey: Sola Scriptura, Solus Christus, Sola Fide, Sola Gratia and Soli Deo Gloria. “I am a wounded healer,” he said.
Overcoming personal trials
Mekoa’s ministry journey included painful trials, such as the loss of two babies, surviving a serious vehicle accident during preparations for the CMM launch, and the killing of his brother and colleague, Boutimelo Mekoa, while on duty at a police station.
He also reflected on losing congregation members, including Marshall Mofet, and his childhood friend Kagisho Phoofolo, who supported him during his studies in the Free State.
Leadership and gratitude
Despite these challenges, he took on several leadership responsibilities within the church. He served two terms as scribe of the Johannesburg Presbytery and chaired the presbytery for a second term, hosting a Southern Synod Day and Presbytery Day.
He also served as interim minister of URCSA Tembisa West, helping the congregation call its own minister, and became interim minister of URCSA Light of Hope. He also served as deputy chairperson of the Supporting Ministry for Publication, Communication and Archives within the Southern Synod.
In his message of gratitude, Mekoa thanked the URCSA Eden Park Church Council, elders, deacons, current and former council members, and the congregation for their contributions over the years.
He also thanked Rev MD Shai for his friendship and support after his accident, as well as colleagues, siblings, extended family, and those who supported him through prayer.
Mekoa acknowledged his wife, Mamoruti Benneline Mekoa, and their children, Kaylinn Bonolo and Boutimelo Jayrin Mekoa, for accompanying him on his journey.
The anniversary concluded with the message ‘Soli Deo Gloria’ – all glory to God alone, reflecting the faith that has remained central to his 15 years of ministry.
