New Maths Club brought learners, parents and educators together at Opelweg

The SAADP TIMCA Maths Club aims to make mathematics fun and practical, build learners’ confidence and introduce them to future STEM opportunities.

The South African Actuarial Development Programme (SAADP), in partnership with TIMCA Global, officially launched the SAADP TIMCA Maths Club at Opelweg Primary School on October 24.

The launch, held in Eden Park, brought together learners, parents, educators and key stakeholders to introduce the programme and showcase how mathematics can be fun, practical and engaging, while also connecting learners to future STEM opportunities.

The programme included interactive maths activities, a stakeholder presentation, parent participation and the official launch moment.

Opelweg Primary principal Roger John welcomed the initiative, saying it will make a meaningful difference for learners who often find mathematics challenging.

“We are proud to host the SAADP TIMCA Maths Club at our school. This programme makes mathematics fun, practical and future-ready for our learners. It gives them confidence and shows them that maths is part of everyday life and can open doors to future careers,” John said.

He added that the school appreciates the partnership with SAADP and TIMCA Global and the involvement of parents in supporting learners’ education.

The launch marks the beginning of the club’s activities at the school, aimed at nurturing potential and inspiring a love for mathematics.

A new initiative, TIMCA – The International Maths Club, is on a mission to remove the fear and negativity around mathematics in schools.

The programme aims to show learners that maths is interesting and part of everyday life, while giving them the confidence to engage in class, ask questions and consider maths-related careers.

The initiative is currently being piloted in partnership with schools in the Ekurhuleni area.

While the initial plan was to start with three schools, so far only Opelweg has taken up the programme, with 77 learners currently benefiting directly.

Speaking on the initiative, executive director of SAADP TIMCA Nthato Selebi said the challenge of education belongs to everyone – corporates, parents, teachers and learners – and that even small organisations can play a role in making a difference.

Active DCS District representative Sedutla Paseka welcomed the programme, saying initiatives that support learners and make maths more accessible are crucial for improving educational outcomes.

The club is now challenging larger organisations to support similar educational initiatives.
