Janine wins top Gauteng sport award

Alberton’s Banyana Banyana captain, Janine van Wyk, was presented with the Sport Personality of the Year award.

EKURHULENI – Gauteng sport stars shone at the fifth annual Gauteng Sport Awards, held at Silver Star Casino in Mogale City, where Alberton scooped a top award.

Alberton’s Banyana Banyana captain, Janine van Wyk, was presented with the Sport Personality of the Year award.

This is another major award for this Hoërskool Alberton past pupil, who was crowned SAFA (South African Football Association) Player of the Year in 2010.

Earlier this year, Janine was named one of three Sportswomen of the Year award winners for Ekurhuleni, based on 2014 achievements.

This newest accolade followed hot on the heels of the news that Janine’s national women’s football side has qualified for the 2016 Olympic Games, in Rio de Janeiro.

Janine also represented South Africa at the 2012 Olympics, in London.

“I’m absolutely at a loss for words! I can’t describe this amazing feeling! All my sacrifices, time and efforts paid off and now to qualify for Olympics,” was Janine’s response on her double feat.
