An Edenvale mother (62) and daughter (42) have been arrested for charges related to the theft of state property.

The women were arrested by Sebenza SAPS on August 11 in the Avenues.

The 42-year-old was arrested for theft and malicious damage to property while the 62-year-old was arrested for obstruction of justice.
Sebenza SAPS spokesperson Sgt Sharon Tsotsotso said the younger suspect stole three police stamps and an ink pad on August 10.

“The theft occurred after she attempted to bail her boyfriend from the police station,” said Tsotsotso.
Tsotsotso said the boyfriend was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.
“She became aggressive and demanded that he be released.”
Tsotsotso said the daughter allegedly physically and verbally assaulted officers in the charge office.
“Officers tried to explain to the daughter that the boyfriend had not sobered up and the necessary paperwork had not been completed.”
After the woman left the station officers noticed that the oath stamp, certification stamp, date stamp and ink pad were missing.
“She was the only person who had been in the charge office. After questioning her boyfriend we learned the daughter’s address.”
Tsotsotso said when officers arrived at the house on August 11 the 62-year-old refused to open for the police officers.
“She insulted the officers with vulgar language,” said Tsotsotso.
The Sebenza Community Policing Forum was called to assist when neighbours started becoming aggressive.
SCPF chairperson Andrew Mosesi said he called security companies to assist the police.
Tsotsotso said while waiting to gain entry officers noticed one of the stamps lying in the driveway of the property.

“Officers used minimum force and broke the gate to gain entry,” said Tsotsotso.
After searching the house officers found the daughter and the other stamps.
Further investigation led to the discovery of the last stamp and the ink pad in the garden.
Tsotsotso said although the mother did not know what her daughter had done she was arrested for not obeying the officers.
She said because the stamps are state property they need to remain at the police station.
“The stamps could have been used for fraudulent activity,” she emphasised.
Tsotsotso urged community members not to be aggressive towards officers.
“We are here to serve the public, community members must stop provoking police officers,” she said.
“Police officers are human beings and would like to be treated fairly and with respect.”
