Cleveland SAPS probe death of two girls who died from eating poisoned bones

It’s alleged the bones were poisoned with rat poison to kill the rats.

Two children died on February 10 in Jumpas Informal Settlement.

According to the mother, the children allegedly ate poisoned bones.

Cleveland spokesperson Capt Johan Jordaan said the incident happened at about 9am.

“The mother said she was sleeping when her son came and told her that her two daughters were eating bones they picked up while playing outside and that they are not well. It’s alleged the bones were poisoned with rat poison to kill the rats. She saw that both girls were dizzy and losing their balance.

“The mother contacted an ambulance, but the ambulance took a long time and she decided to hire somebody to take her to the Bertha Gxowa Hospital in Germiston,” explained Jordaan.

Both girls, five and three years old, were declared dead upon arrival at the hospital.

“The hospital called the Germiston police and an inquest docket was opened and later transferred to Cleveland Police Station for investigation.

“This is a very sad incident. The Cleveland police will investigate this case thoroughly to ensure there was no foul play.

“If so, the person responsible for the death of these two girls will face the full might of the law,” said Jordaan.

The docket will be allocated to a skilled investigating officer to ensure it is investigated properly.

“We urged parents to be vigilant of their surroundings and they must always know what their children are doing at all times.

“If anybody has more information regarding this case they can phone the Cleveland Police Station,” pleaded Jordaan.
