BAE members keep busy at Arbor Village
Janet Brodrick BAE chairperson hopes the lockdown will be lifted soon in order for the association to continue with their meetings and outings.
Bedfordview Association for the Elderly (BAE) chairperson Janet Brodrick gives updates on the association and insights as to how she keeps busy at retirement home Arbor Village in Bedfordview during lockdown.
“We wisely decided to cancel all activities until the pandemic settled down,” said Janet.
Janet recalled the association scheduled to spend April 15 to 24 at Blue Marlin Hotel in Scottburgh.
“Sadly this is cancelled.
“We have enjoyed wonderful holidays at Blue Marlin who gives us a very good package.
“We are, however, still scheduled to visit Badplaas Rotary Resort from September 13 to 20,” said Janet.
She said the regular monthly newsletter is due to go out via email soon.
Janet resides at Methodist Homes: Arbor Village in Bedfordview along with many members from the association.
She said lockdown rules at the village are strict on orders from Methodist Homes for the Aged head office.
“This is unpopular; many residents like to walk around the complex, but we need to comply in order to be safe, ” said Janet.
Due to the rules, Janet said many residents have plenty of time on their hands.
“Television viewing is popular, and many read books.
“Our librarian kindly puts a selection of books out on a table at reception so anyone passing by may read it then return the book,” said Janet.
She said daily excitement is lunchtime for most residents.
“Many residents have opted to order our daily main meal from the kitchen.
“Around 12pm we collect our meals keeping a safe distance apart.
“It is pleasant to see our fellow villagers,” said Janet.
Janet added many residents knit, sew and crochet, while others do art work with spring cleaning also becoming more popular than usual.”
She said some do jigsaw puzzles and those who are technology savvy play computer games and gardening is another way of passing time.
“I feel very privileged to live at Arbor Village.
“My basic meals are supplied. Should I need medical assistance it is available, and despite social distancing, I enjoy some pleasant exchanges with fellow residents,” said Janet.
As per Janet, the nurses and care workers are saints as a number of staff are presently living on the property.
“I certainly hope my fellow BAE members who live in retirement villages feel as privileged as I do.
“I am sure we all hope the pandemic threat is soon reduced,” said Janet.
She hopes for revitalising of the economy, and to reinstate freedom of movement.
“I also want our medical workers to know they are heroes,” said Janet.
