Edenvale SAPS spokesperson Sgt Jacob Mashile believes the crimes were committed by opportunistic criminals.
He did not believe there was a group of criminals specifically targeting Edenvale’s elderly.
“In both instances, it was most likely burglaries which escalated to robberies when the suspects realised somebody was home,” said Mashile.
“But just because they [the elderly] are vulnerable, doesn’t mean they have to be completely helpless.”

He provided the following tips to help prevent crimes against the elderly:
• If your door opens onto a street or communal hallway, never open your door automatically, instal and use a peephole.
• Lock your doors and windows and keep your garage doors locked.
• Change your daily routine often.
• Don’t leave notes on the door when going out.
• Notify neighbours and a security company when going away on a trip.
• Be wary of unsolicited offers to make repairs to your home.
• Don’t hesitate to report suspicious activities.
• Instal deadbolt locks on all your doors.
• Ask for proper identification from a delivery person or stranger.
• Never let a stranger into your home.
• Never give out information over the phone, indicating you are alone or that you won’t be home.
• Use a neighbourhood watch system to keep an eye on your neighbourhood.
“A concerned neighbour is often the best protection against crime,” said Mashile.
“Suspicious behaviour will be noticed and reported to the police quickly.”
