185 drunk drivers taken off Joburg roads in JMPD operation

The JMPD arrested 185 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol during weekly operations, as part of its continued effort to enhance road safety and enforce traffic compliance across the city.

The JMPD confirmed that a week of operations (October 13 to 19) to improve public safety and ensure road traffic compliance yielded 185 arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol.

The high visibility of officers and a series of roadblocks were key in removing drunk and dangerous drivers from the roads.

These efforts are part of the JMPD’s zero-tolerance approach to road lawlessness and the protection of residents.

JMPD acting chief of police, acting commissioner Eldred Fortein, issued a stern warning after the release of the weekly figures.

“The arrest of 185 motorists in just seven days for incidents involving intoxication is unacceptable.

“These individuals made a selfish choice to endanger every other road user in Johannesburg,” said Fortein.

“The JMPD is committed to reclaiming our roads. Our message is unequivocal: If you operate a vehicle while impaired or negligently, our officers will find you.

“We will not relent in our efforts to ensure traffic regulations and municipal by-laws are respected, and offenders will be held accountable to the full extent of the law.”

The JMPD urges residents and visitors to prioritise road safety by making responsible choices, including:
• Planning alternate transport arrangements if consuming alcohol;
• Adhering to speed limits;
• Ensuring vehicle and licence documentation remains valid and compliant.

The weekly operations are part of an ongoing citywide initiative to reduce road fatalities, promote responsible driving and create safer communities for all residents.
