Antill dies at 96
Benoni resident Patricia Paddy Antill died on August 23 at the age of 96.
She was born in Benoni in 1917 during the First World War, while her father was serving in the army in Namibia.
Antill attended Benoni West Primary School and Benoni High School.
She got married at a young age and had four children namely, Desmond, Brenda, Lionel and Keith.
She was the eldest daughter in a family of six children, and as a child, she grew up during the depression years that followed the war.
Antill found time to contribute to the war effort by joining the South African Woman’s Auxilliary Services (SAWAS).
After the war she worked as a shop assistant at Greatermans Stores, she then went to work for Prudential Assurance Company as an insurance advisor for 25 years.
She retired at the age of 60.
In sport she won a number of bowling championships and was elected as the chairwoman of the woman’s section of the Benoni Municipals Bowling Club and chairwoman of the Eastern Transvaal Woman’s Bowling Association.
She was also the Benoni Pioneer’s Association chairwoman for a number of years before retiring.
She enjoyed knitting, embroidery, crocheting and dressmaking.
Her hobbies during her senior years included tapestry, woodcarving and stained glasswork.
She loved being surrounded by family and was always interested in what every family member was involved in.
She is survived by her son Des Jamieson and daughter Brenda McDonald, son-in-law Ken McDonald, daughters-in-law Shirley Jamieson, Maureen Antill and Kathy Jamieson, 12 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
