Handbag snatching gang nabbed

Benoni police arrested three women and two men in the Benoni CBD, after they were found to be in possession of stolen handbags and cellphones, on July 4.

The suspects were driving slowly in a white VW Jetta, when the police became suspicious and stopped it.

“Upon searching the car, WO Selby Mofokeng and Const Vernon Alladipan found more than seven handbags and cellphones,” said Benoni police spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele.

The suspects could not explain why they had so many handbags and cellphones in the car, so the police decided to take them to the station.

“Once there, one of the cellphones rang and none of the suspects wanted to answer it,” said Sekele.

“The officer answered and it turned out to be one of ther their victim’s sister,” said Sekele.

It was then that the officers established that the phones were stolen.

The victim came to the police station and positively identified the suspects.

While police were still charging them, two more people arrived at the station to lay charges and they also positively identified the suspects.

The five suspects are expected to appear soon in the Benoni Magistrates Court.
