Boarding animals at reputable facilities
With regard to stray and abandoned animals, the Benoni SPCA welcomes food and other donations for these animals.
With Christmas and New Year rapidly approaching, the Benoni SPCA is starting to prepare for the influx of unwanted, stray and abandoned animals, said manager Vicky Finnemore
“We urge pet owners to board their pets at reputable boarding facilities rather than at home with someone occasionally checking on them,” said Finnemore.
“The amount of deliberate dog poisoning is escalating, and dogs that have been left to protect property while their owners are away become prime targets.

“Should your pet go missing during Christmas or at any other time, we advise you to do the following:
• Go to your local and surrounding SPCAs and look through the kennels for your pet.
• Check for your pet at other local animal shelters in the area as Benoni has at least a dozen pet shelters and rescue centres that take in stray animals.
• Make posters with the details of your missing animal as well as a photo and hand it out to local veterinary clinics, shopping centres and schools.
• Place a notice for your missing pet in your local newspaper.
• Alert your neighbours of the missing pet.
• Make use of social media networks such as community WhatsApp groups and Facebook.
“It is essential for pets to wear collars with identification.
“Microchipping your pet is very responsible but visual identification is best.
“If anyone would like to help us care for animals during this period and huge influx, we welcome members of the public to donate food and other necessities or contribution towards them.
“It’s best to book in advance for the holiday seasons.”
Finnemore said it’s best to book in advance for the holiday season, and that the Benoni SPCA offered boarding facilities for cats and dogs, all year round.
