Event celebrates men in law enforcement

"We wanted to celebrate our men in the police to show that we appreciate everything they do.”

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Captain Nomsa Sekele encouraged the ‘powerful figures’ in law enforcement to mentor at least one boy child in the community.

Sekele spoke during the Father’s Day celebratory prayer at the Charisma Church in Northmead, on June 13.
It was attended by the SAPS Zone Two, EMPD, Modderbee Correctional Centre officials and SAPS Flying Squad, as well as community members in the safety and security sector.

Speakers included officials from the department of health, social workers and Benoni SAPS station commander, Brigadier Khumbulani Mbatha.

Bishop Joyce Mononyane led an intercessory prayer for, among others, safety and security, children and youth, and peace in the community.

“We encourage our male police and others to adopt and mentor at least one boy in the community. This will make a huge impact and could help stop the mischief that our boys get into,” she said.

The event was held at the Charisma Chruch.

The event was hosted by the Ward 27 faith-based committee, led by Maryna Zwarts to get those in law enforcement in Benoni “to walk in their God-given identity”.

“We want to pray together with them to start forming connections. The basis of this is that if they know who they are and that they belong to God, they will walk and talk differently and will also treat people with respect,” said Zwarts.

She added, “If we can instil fathers’ identity back again, especially in the police force because it’s mainly men, it will make a bigger impact in the community.”

Sekele shared Zwarts’ views, saying, “We believe the event will bring about change at the Benoni SAPS and the other stations.

“Men are dominant in the police. There’s a perception that everything is about women. We wanted to celebrate our men in the police to show that we appreciate everything they do.”
