Etwatwa youth stabbed to death following cellphone dispute
An 18-year-old girl, who is in matric, has been arrested for the murder, which occurred at her house.
The community of Etwatwa is in shock following the murder of Sicelokuhle Msibi (21) during an altercation reportedly sparked by a dispute over a cellphone on August 25.
An 18-year-old matric girl was arrested for the murder, which occurred at her house that night when Sicelokuhle reportedly arrived to fetch his phone from her.
She appeared in the Daveyton Magistrate’s Court on August 27, where the magistrate postponed the matter to September 16.
Sicelokuhle’s aunt, Vivian Radebe, said the information they received is that the accused came to Sicelokuhle’s home on August 24 with her boyfriend, claiming that Sicelokuhle’s friend had taken her phone. They then took Sicelokuhle’s phone and left the premises.

She explained that Sicelokuhle reported the matter to his mother, who then accompanied him the following day to the boyfriend’s house. He said the phone was with the girl.
Sicelokuhle and his mother reportedly proceeded to the local school where the teenager is enrolled and requested the cellphone from her.
“When they got there, the girl admitted that she had the phone but said she would give it back after school because it was at home,” Radebe explained.
Later, it is reported that Sicelokuhle went to the girl’s home to request his cellphone, and that is when he was fatally stabbed.
Radebe said Sicelokuhle’s mother, who had been sleeping at the time, was called to rush to the scene, but unfortunately, when she arrived, her son was already dead.
His aunt described Sicelokuhle as a cheerful, bubbly, and respectful boy who enjoyed making jokes and brought joy to those around him. She added that his death has left the family devastated, as he had a promising future.
“We cannot believe he is gone. It’s like they are lying, and he will walk through the gate.”
She added that Sicelokuhle’s mother is weak and struggling to come to terms with his death.
“She loved her son so much. She raised him as a single parent after Sicelokuhle’s father died in 2016,” said the grieving aunt.
Radebe noted that Sicelokuhle, who had completed his matric, dreamed of becoming a pilot.
Etwatwa SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Barbra Ndaba confirmed the incident and said investigations are underway.
Sicelokuhle will be buried on August 30 at Phumlani Cemetery.
