Trick or Treat on Russel Street is back!
Bring donations of dog and cat food for Benoni SPCA and Murphy Cat Project.
In an effort to revive the historical splendour of one of the city’s oldest suburbs, the Western Extension Village Halloween Group invites young and old to take part in what promises to be a ghostly, magical evening filled with treats and prizes on November 1.
The group of residents has revived the popular Trick or Treat on Russel Street event, with a route that winds under the cover of century-old trees and past ancient homes.
Drawing on this mystical allure, the ‘spook-tacular’ walk is set to excite young trick-or-treaters and captivate those who delight in spine-chilling tales of haunted houses, says the former owner of Lemongrass restaurant in Russel Street, Ivonne Taylor.
Entry to the walk is free, although donations of dog and cat food in aid of the Benoni SPCA and The Murphy Cat Project are welcome.
“Our suburb has a rich history, and the heritage houses bear testament to a town that withstood battles and onslaughts, remaining resilient and resolute in its pursuit of growth,” said Ivonne.
“It has been three years since we hosted a Halloween walk, and we’re very grateful for the support of local businesses in putting on a great event. The aim of the walk is to lure feet back into this eclectic part of Benoni, to rediscover its beauty and rich heritage.”
Starting at Calrin House, 17 Russel Street, participants will complete a 2.5km loop through Kemston Avenue, Bright Street and Mayor Avenue, concluding their festivities at the newly renovated, family-friendly Big G’s Quarterdeck restaurant, where the best-dressed will be announced.

Trick or treat collection points along the route will be manned by residents and businesses including, Cleo’s Restaurant, Pam Golding, Guardians and Moonas.
Members of the Benoni CPF and AfriForum Benoni will be on hand to ensure participants stay on course and remain safe, while local businesses along the route will share their bounty of sweet treats.
Participants are encouraged to get creative, dress up, and enter the best costume competition for a chance to win exciting prizes. The festivities kick off at 17:00.
“We hope the community will flood the streets, enjoying an evening in one of the city’s forgotten gems,” said Ivonne.
“This is an incredibly special place, which, if ignored, may fall into disrepair. Through continued community support, we will be able to preserve its nostalgic beauty.”
