Crime in Brief

Crime prevention operations are expected to intensify during the festive season.

Between October 27 and November 1, the Benoni Flying Squad (BFS) and Police Emergency Services (PES) made several arrests and recovered multiple stolen vehicles and drugs during various operations across Gauteng.

Vehicle recoveries
Acting on information from the EMPD Crime Intelligence Unit, BFS members recovered a white Ford Territory in Birch Acres, Kempton Park on October 27. The vehicle had been reported stolen in Honeydew and a 39-year-old suspect was arrested.
On October 31, a grey Jaguar F-Pace reported stolen in Silverton was found in an Atlasville estate. A 31-year-old man was arrested for possession of the stolen vehicle.

Drug-related arrests
Two suspects aged 19 and 23 were arrested in Thembisa on October 28 after BFS officers recovered Mandrax and cocaine.
Following up on additional information, officers stopped a white Toyota RAV travelling on the N12 towards Johannesburg on October 30. Inside the vehicle police found three bags of dagga leading to the arrest of two men aged 27 and 35 for possession of drugs.
In a separate operation on October 31, a 43-year-old man was arrested in Thembisa after officers received a tip-off that he was allegedly selling drugs. Mandrax tablets were recovered during the arrest.

Possession of stolen property
On October 30, BFS officers recovered a white Isuzu truck in Springs following a community tip-off. The truck was reportedly linked to several serious crimes in Moffat View, Johannesburg.
Two suspects aged 35 and 39 were arrested at the scene. The truck was found loaded with 14 truck tyres valued at R700 000, allegedly stolen during a business robbery in Cleveland.

PES operations across Gauteng
From October 24 to 30, the Police Emergency Services (PES), which includes the Flying Squad, K9 Units and Highway Patrol arrested 133 suspects across Gauteng.

The week’s operation resulted in:
• 54 arrests for serious crimes including assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, possession of stolen property, house robbery, theft out of a motor vehicle, malicious damage to property, possession of endangered species, shoplifting, murder, immigration violations, damage to essential infrastructure, domestic violence, illegal mining, rape and fraud

• 51 hijacked and stolen vehicles recovered with 21 arrests made for possession of these vehicles

• 13 suspects arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms and seven weapons seized

• 45 suspects arrested for drug possession and dealing with drugs including heroin, dagga, cocaine, mandrax and methamphetamine recovered
