Senior citizens display talent at market
They sold handcrafted items, food and other goods.
The talents of the Country Life Retirement Village in Brentwood Park were on full display during their craft and food market on November 15.
From handmade crafts, electronics to scrumptuous food and goodie bags, the market burst to life as community members turned out in their numbers to support the senior citizens sell their Christmas-inspired creations.

Still beaming with youthful energy, Pam Stoltz and Jessie McLaren of the Country Life Knitting Group sat proudly behind their table, which was piled high with hand-knitted teddy bears, toys and woolen jerseys.
“We started this group to keep the ladies busy with knitting because it’s very good for their hands, and mentally, to keep on knitting and crocheting. We also donate to charities,” said McLaren.

McLaren said they will use the proceeds from the market to buy more wool for next year’s charity drives.

Lettie Blomerus brought festive cheer to her stall with handcrafted wooden Christmas trees and stars. It may have taken her some time to perfect each piece, but the end result left her beaming with pride.

“Everything is made of wood. I have handcrafted it. It took me a while, especially cutting everything because I use a jigsaw and then had to paint it. But I’m happy with the work,” she said.
Country Life resident and the market co-organiser Carol Middleton said the market was a success. It grew from 33 tables last year to 42 this year.

“It’s something we do every year. The main objective is to find from our residents what their skills are.
“It’s amazing how many talented people we have here. We also want the market to grow. We invited people from Rynpark one and four. The market is doing well. Every year it’s a big success,” she said.
