Search ongoing for robbery suspect at Korsman Bird Sanctuary

The suspect was reportedly armed with a knife.

Korsman Bird Sanctuary is a hive of activity this morning (March 27) as the search continues for a man believed to have “attacked” a domestic worker and stolen a cellphone at a house on The Drive, Westdene, earlier.

While the Benoni SAPS are yet to send an official report to the Benoni City Times about the incident, Korsman Conservancy chairperson Jane Trembath is on scene and told us they have not found the suspect.

“I received a call to say the suspect had jumped the fence and was in the water, attempting to swim across the pan to hide in the reeds. I went down with security guards, and we took out some canoes, but have not found where he could be hiding.

These shoes were found on rock island, believed to belong to the man they’re looking for.

“Some security staff went to the rock island because people had seen the suspect leaving something there, and they found his shoes, but beyond that, we can’t find him.

“Belgian Canine Patrols then came with their dog to see if it could sniff him in the air, but still nothing. We don’t know at this stage whether he is still in here. He could try to come out after dark from wherever he is hiding.”

Trembath said the stolen phone was retrieved, and reports are that the suspect had a knife.

This is a developing story.
