Parents desperate to find schools for their children

Parents endure long queue to have their children's application issues resolved

Demanding placement for their Grades One and Eight children, hundreds of disgruntled parents from across Ekurhuleni gathered outside the Department of Education offices in Benoni on January 9.

Queued in a snaking line, parents said they had been waiting since the early hours of the morning.

The visibly frustrated parents said they wanted answers to why their children had not been placed in schools, despite applying on time. Other parents said they were there to find out why their children were placed in schools, not of their choice.

Meanwhile, the Gauteng Department of Education said on January 10 they are continuing to place Grade One and Eight learners who applied during the 2023 online admissions application period.

The department said currently, some applicants remain unplaced, while some applicants who previously had incomplete applications continue to be placed.

So far, 139 228 Grade One and 151 523 Grade Eight learners have been placed in various schools in Gauteng.

The department has also received a total of 4 801 appeals emanating from objected placements offered to applicants. The department said it is working tirelessly to finalise these appeals.
