Spacey holiday

Monday, May 4 was a very special day in the minds of a very specific group of people across the world -- it was Star Wars Day.

The franchise has become so popular and so adored by its fan(atic) base, that it now has its own unofficial holiday.

The “holiday” was first celebrated in 2011 and has still not gained official recognition, and for a good reason, the day was not chosen for its historic significance regarding Star Wars, but rather for the easy pun it creates.

The slogan for the day is “May the fourth be with you”, pertaining to the popular quote from the movies “May the force be with you”.

This year the day was marked by fans dressing up and events created specifically to pay homage to the franchise, including parties, trivia games being played and simply watching a marathon of the films.

Star Wars Day 2015 was also appropriately celebrated in space.

The astronauts aboard the International Space Station posted a tweet of themselves watching one of the films on the day.

The fun doesn’t have to end after May 4, however, as May 5 is now also referred to as “Revenge of the fifth”, a play on “Revenge of the Sith”, the title of the third episode in the series.

This day gives fans a chance to go “to the dark side”, by dressing up as sith (bad guys) instead of jedi (good guys).

This year is even more important for the international fandom, as the latest film in the franchise will be released in December.

“The Force Awakens” is the first Star Wars film in the last nine years and will directly follow on the original series, released in the 1980s.

The holiday included many tie-ins to the release of the film, and some estimate it will become one of the highest grossing films during its theatrical run.

Fans will just have to wait and see, but at least they could enjoy their passion on this very unique holiday. FvD
