Benoni plays home to Nomads Women’s Nationals
The opening of the 30th Nomads Women’s National Bowls Tournament took place on Sunday, July 5 at Benoni Country Club (BCC).
The tournament, which runs until Thursday, sees Nomad woman bowlers from 12 different districts from around South Africa coming together for a common cause.
Nomad bowlers are committed to use the sport of bowls as a way to raise money for their communities.
Money is raised by hosting bowling afternoons, tournament and involvement in various fundraising initiatives throughout the year.
In 2014 Nomads supported the National Charity and money was donated to autism.
This year funds will be donated to Motor Neuron disease.
The members also support many local charities throughout the country by supplying them with much needed goods.
Eunice Stockton, secretary of East Nomads, said: “East Rand Nomads is proud to have the honour of hosting the 30th Nomads Women’s nationals.
“The tournament has many proud traditions with one of them being our pink day which is on Thursday where money is raised and donated to cancer initiatives.
She also welcomed the special guests who included Kobus Victor (Nomads national president), Jerry Gertzen (Nomads national executive), Dora Mlambo (MMC for the Ekurhuleni Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture), Atwell Sijadu (director of the Ekurhuleni Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture), Ian Stockton (East Rand past president), Grant Sloane (East Rand Nomads president), Barry Firth (East Nomads vice-president) and Gary Brown (BCC president).
