In a cart inspired by the 900 horses of Detroit muscle, the Street in Law team from Benoni will again look to add the X-factor as they defend their Red Bull Box Cart Race title on November 6 in Cape Town.
“It’s a beast,” said Stuart Turner to the Benoni City Times.
Racing in a bobsled in 2018, the then four-member team electrified the 25 000-strong crowds in Sandton with their booty-shaking dance routine and body-hugging green Lycra outfit.
This year it’s still a family affair as Stuart and Gareth Turner and Lloyd and Jason Herbst have added another Turner brother, John, to the team.
With a completely different design and long hours ensuring that theirs is among the stand-out carts at the event. Even though it is about fun, Stuart is adamant they will emulate their 2018 feat.

“Preparation has been going well. A completely new cart was designed. It is a very unique build with 184 specially designed parts.
“Most definitely, it will be one of the stand-out carts and the likelihood of another victory. We live our lives a quarter mile at a time. Nothing else matters, not the mortgage, not the store, not our team and their problems. For those 10 seconds or less, we are free.”
This exciting non-motorised race offers spectators an action-packed thrill like no other, as they get to witness carts go through the challenging slope-like track in the Bo-Kaap in Cape Town.
Teams will have their driving skills and the craftsmanship of the box cart put to the test as one of the main sponsors, BFGoodrich, has added a twist to the track with a cobblestones obstacle for racers and spectators to enjoy.
Over 60 teams will compete for the coveted title this year.
