Delightful salads and tasty food at the Secret Garden
It was a bit chilly when we visited the Secret Garden, recently, and all the sunny outside tables in the garden area were full, so we ventured inside to the intriguingly laid tables with their unique crockery and cutlery.
Relaxing and winding down, we asked about the soup of the day and opted for three large bowls of tasty butternut soup to warm us up.
Accompanied by cunning little bread rolls, it was almost enough for a meal, but we knew we had to taste more.
I was accompanied by two vegetarians (the Secret Garden offers vegetarian and vegan options with plenty of choice for meat eaters) so I had to do my bit for “ordinary eaters” and chose a special of the day; hake and trout pie with chips and a delightful salad (strawberries and starfruit were a nice touch, not to mention the avo and baby salad leaves).
I devoured my pie and salad and had a bit of help with the chips from my fellow lunchers.
The “Veges” both plumped for another special of the day, quiche and salad (also a beautiful experience), in their case the delicious filling quiche with mushroom, spinach and Emmentaler cheese, which had me stealing a bite.
A pleasant, lazy, if somewhat extended afternoon, with fresh, tasty, satisfying food.
Brian Graham and Tim Jones’s Secret Garden, in Uncle Tim’s Centre, in High Road, has a special magic (and the cats still prowl graceful and haughty) and is open for breakfast and lunch every day of the week. HG
