Local DJ mixes his way to the top
Northmead resident, Kino Isaac (26) is an electronic dance music DJ who hopes to take his career and events business to new levels.
He earned second place in the DJ Mix Club DJ School’s competition, in Randburg, on March 28.
“We each played a 15-minute set consisting of five tracks and we were rated on our beat matching, how we made use of the jog wheels, the EQs on the mixers and other elements which make up a good set by a mix DJ,” explained Isaac.
His set was well received by the patrons at the News Café where he was playing, and this earned him second place in the competition.
“I felt great, as I was able to see that what I have learned at the school and over the years has really helped to perfect my skills,” he said.
He was able to celebrate along with his friends and business partners, Ziyaad Mahomed and Javed Khan, later that evening, at an event they were hosting at a small club in the northern suburbs.
“We managed to pull a crowd of 200 people, whereas the club usually attracted only about 50 people,” Isaac said. ”Posh My Gosh Events is the brainchild of my friends, Ziyaad and Jeff.
”They started hosting small scale events and, in June, landed a gig at Vacca Matta, at Montecasino.
”The gig went well and I joined them as not only the resident DJ for their events, but also as a business partner.”
His first gig as a DJ with Posh My Gosh Events took place last year, in October, and the trio has since been signed up to host the student night, which takes place once a month.
“It’s been exciting seeing our business and my career on the decks flourish over the past few month; we’re excited to have been given the chance to host our first Friday gig, on April 17, when I’ll be playing alongside 5FM’s Chrizz Beatz and the Twins on Decks,” Isaac said.
His love for music and being on the decks started when he was younger and he has been making people dance since he was only 16.
“My older brother, Colin, is also a DJ and I’d watch him practise his sets at home; that’s how I got into Djing,” he explained.
When he moved to Benoni in 2002 and started attending Wordsworth High, he started hosting house parties and played house, hip hop and R ‘n B.
He started working at the young age of 18 and had to support himself from then on, so his DJ career had to take a backseat.
“I took a break for about four years, but my passion didn’t die,” he said.
”I would go to gigs hosted by DJ Nauty Neil and he would ask me to help with the promotion side of appearances, which helped me to understand the business side of being a DJ.”
Isaac’s passion is being a DJ and he hopes to join some of the great names he’s grown up admiring over the years.
“I look at DJ Fresh and Euphonik, who started out playing the traditional sound of house, but have since evolved to the electronic sound – for me, it says that that’s where dance music is moving towards and I’m glad, because that’s the sound I’m passionate about,” he said.
He hopes that the future will see him focusing solely on his DJ career and his events company.
“All three of us hope to be doing this full time in the near future, without having to support what we love doing with a day job.”
