Young scientists tackle challenge

Durban High School hosted teams for the iTHINK Challenge during National Science Week.

EIGHTEEN Durban High School students recently participated in the Hip2B2 iTHINK Challenge that formed part of National Science Week.

The theme for National Science Week this year is International Year of Water Cooperation and the HIP2B2 team aim to educate the youth on challenges facing water management during this week through the iTHINK challenge.

The Department of Science and Technology (DST) celebrates science during the annual awareness week with a number of initiatives, including this challenge, which is implemented across all nine provinces in conjunction with the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA).

The winners of the KwaZulu-Natal round will compete against the winners of each of the other eight provinces in a final round, at a series of HIP2B2-organised interactive public events throughout South Africa, held in conjunction with DST and SAASTA.

The schools represented by the top three finalist teams in the HIP2B² iTHINK Challenge will receive prizes of R15 000 for first place, R10 000 for second place and R5 000 for third place.

There were a number of schools that participated in the Durban leg of the challenge on Tuesday, 30 July, with DHS entering teams that included a mixture of Grades 8 to 11 that worked well together through the variety of science and maths related tasks, riddles and problems that were focused around water cooperation and engineering focus (where learners had to create a water supply system) as well as a cereal challenge (where learners had to create the perfect cereal recipe), but unfortunately they did not make it through to the finals.

The top three results were 1st place going to Crawford College La Lucia, second place going to Danville Girls’ High and third going to Northlands Girls’ High.
