Community cooks up a storm

MEALS on Wheels Durban enjoyed a huge boost from corporates and the community who participated in their Cook Off at their Umbilo premises on Thursday morning.

MEALS on Wheels Durban enjoyed a huge boost from corporates and the community who participated in a Cook Off at its Umbilo premises on Thursday morning.

Companies and local celebrities gathered into teams to cook for approximately 1600 underprivileged individuals in the greater Durban community.

With the “cook-off” competition in Umbilo, each team cooked for approximately 400 people. The teams comprised of eight team members and the groups enjoyed making a meal together.

Teams had to chop, grate, peel and wash vegetables as well as spice and cook the food before they could dish up and deliver it to the different areas.

Radio personality Abi Ray who had a team of celeb volunteers which included comedian Jem Atkins said, “I always look for opportunities to help were I can and this has been an incredible fun experience for us all.”

Pastor Clifford Nhlapo said the Meals on Wheels partnership with the Mandela Foundation was hoping for a life changing event and this was evident with the kind of support received. “This is something you don’t often see but we like to encourage with corporates and communities working together, young and old just being happy to help,” he added.

Gershon Naidoo, director of KZN Meals on Wheels was excited to show the greater community what the organisation is about. “We are by the people for the people and all we do is through the kindness of South Africans who donate to us. It is humbling and makes us more accountable, more transparent and do more for the community,” he added.
