Ridge road collapsed wall a looming danger
A property owner in Peter Mokaba Road has been waiting months for a boundary wall at his home to be fixed.
MONTHS after a boundary wall collapsed into his property in Peter Mokaba (Ridge) Road, Anu Singh is still waiting for the wall to be repaired.
Singh said the wall, which is old and has weak foundations, collapsed onto his property in February. Fortunately no one was hurt.
“We think the damage was caused by the pressure from cars driving up and down the driveway next to the wall. Luckily we have a retaining wall inside and trees to hold it up from falling completely onto the property,” said Singh.
He said at the time, a city engineering inspector went to inspect the damage and had handed the matter over to enforcement.
“We just want this fixed. It is a danger for us too, as people can access the property. Neither our neighbours nor the municipality has told us what is going to happen to fix this,” he said.
However, Tozi Mthethwa, eThekwini Head of Communications, confirmed that the offending property owner had been issued with a notice in terms of the relevant Building Regulations bylaws.
“A summons has been prepared for delivery to the owner as the notice has expired. In addition, the owner will be issued with a final notification requesting that remedial work be carried out within a specific time period, the costs of which will be borne by the offending property owner,” she said.
She said officials from the relevant City Unit met with Singh and had requested that a safety barrier be installed in a specific area within his property and that no one be allowed beyond the safety barrier until the hazardous materials were removed completely, to the satisfaction of the unit.
“The property will be monitored regularly in order to ensure compliance with the National Building Regulations and Building Standards Act no 103 of 1977 as amended,” she said.
