Water leaks a major concern
Water leaks and loss is a major concern for residents of Juniper Road.
WATER wastage is a major concern for the residents of Overport and Musgrave after recent water leaks in Juniper Road took at least two weeks to fix.
According to Chris Durand, a resident who lives close to Juniper Road, the water loss due to leaks is a “dire situation.” “There's been a major leak in the middle of the road and it has been pouring down along the pavement on both sides of the road so it shows just how much water is being wasted. It's definitely a good couple of thousands of litres that is going down the drain.”
Durand said residents had tried to contact the Water Department to fix the leak for a few days and asked him to try because they had no luck. “Its been leaking for almost a whole week. Once a plumber was sent but after he arrived early last week, he was urgently called to do major repairs in the South Coast. We received no help till Thursday morning when they finally came to try to fix it,” said Durand.
Tania Donjeany, a resident who lives across the leak said the sound of the water pouring out had been awful to listen to for nearly a week before it was fixed. “In the morning you forget about the leak and wonder if its raining. I believe the constant water leaks in the road are due to large trucks using this little road and damaging the fragile water pipes, but is not an excuse to take a week to have it fixed. We cannot afford to lose so much water,” she added.
Durand said he was happy the leak had been finally fixed however he hoped the Water Department would look at different ways of checking the main pipe after they fixed it because he believed more wastage was occurring with the checks. “They open the hydrants on the road to release the air pressure. They say its the only solution to make sure the pressure is released and they don't cause burst pipes, but more water flows down the road as they do the checks. We have to see the water wasted from the leaks and now, after they fix the leak, we see the hydrant water flowing too. There has got to be another way or they must come with tanks to save the water,” he said.
