Clean up when you’re done, Elgie Road residents tell city
Unfinished work by municipal departments has angered residents of Elgie Road.
MUNICIPAL departments need to follow-up on work done in suburbs, says ward councillor, Nicole Graham.
This follows a site visit with residents in Elgie Road, Umbilo last week, where Graham was made aware of issues such as unfinished pavements and debris from trimmed trees not being moved by the Parks Department.
“The municipality attended to a massive burst years ago and left the pavement in a terrible state, which was dangerous for people walking on the pavement in the evening or at night. On another occasion, the owner of a house was unable to get into or out of his garage after a burst pipe on the pavement. This seems to be the norm as three months ago a burst pipe was attended to, but the pavement has never been fixed up and re-tarred and is a mess!” said a resident.
He said tree trimming had been done, but the cut branches had been left lying underneath the trees on the pavement for weeks.
“We have also requested DSW sweep our road, but this was only done last month. We are looking to sell our house, as are a lot of other residents in our road, but agents tell us the area isn't looking great, so it is a bit of a problem! This used to be a lovely road,” he said.
Councillor Graham said the municipality needed to follow up and ensure departments did their job.
“It is unacceptable that jobs are not done properly, such as the work on the pavements and the trees being left. I will be following up on this,” she said.
