Metro to monitor speeding taxis
Metro Police will enforce the law against taxi drivers in Umbilo.

METRO POLICE has been tasked to monitor the Alan Patron and Gale Street intersection after complaints about taxi drivers jumping red robots and speeding were received.
According to a Glenwood residents who asked not to be named, the unruly behaviour of taxi drivers in the Umbilo area and particular at the Alan Paton Road and Magwaza Maphalala (Gale ) Street intersection is out of hand and it is just a matter of time before someone is hurt or killed.
“It's really getting out of hand as they keep flying through red traffic lights, and it is becoming so dangerous,” he said.
He said in the afternoons around 4.30pm when everyone is travelling home, taxis fly down Williams (Khuzimphi Shezi) Road, meeting up with Sydney Road.
“I witnessed two taxis split to the left and right of a vehicle and nearly took out a whole crowd of pedestrians trying to cross the road. The traffic lights were in the favour of the pedestrians. The pedestrians started screaming and running. This is unacceptable! Traffic cops need to be on guard and take their licences away if they're caught running red traffic lights and speeding in these area,” he said.
Tozi Mthethwa, head of communications from eThekwini municipality, said Metro Police had been tasked to monitor the Alan Paton and Gale Street intersection and take the necessary enforcement action to ensure that law and order is maintained.”
