Speed enforcement is needed, says resident
Craig McLachlan has lost count of how many times the light pole outside his house has been replaced after being smashed into by cars.
AN accident on Rick Turner Road on Friday night has concerned resident, Craig McLachlan pleading for the authorities to take action against speedsters.
According to McLachlan, a vehicle travelling at a very high speed smashed into the street pole outside his home on what has become known as 'suicide bend'.
“The driver was injured, debris was strewn all over the pavement and road and the car was beyond repair. Once again, this just shows how dangerous it is for my neighbour and I, who have to enter and exit our driveways on a daily basis. My neighbour had arrived home just two minutes before the car smashed into the street light. I have lost count of how many times this pole has now been replaced,” he said.
Numerous appeals have been made to the authorities over a number of years calling for action to be taken to prevent further accidents occurring at this spot on Rick Turner Road. Calls have also been made for permanent speed cameras to be installed along the road. “Once again, I am going to plead with the council to get something done,” said McLachlan.
Nicole Graham said she would request the Metro Police undertake speed enforcement in the road and said she had put forward a proposal that guard rails be considered for this particular stretch of the road.
Carlos Esteves from eThekwini Transport Authority, said: “I have asked the Road Safety branch to re-assess the situation. The reality is that with the poor vehicle accident record in the city, there are numerous locations that have worse accident records than this location and we are endeavouring to address the worst locations by priority based on the accident records.”
