Enforcement needed on bus routes, says councillor

Ward councillor Nicole Graham said the municipality needs to ensure their is enforcemtn of bus routes in Glenwood.

BUSES not using allocated bus routes is an ongoing problem in Glenwood, says ward councillor, Nicole Graham.

According to Graham, buses are frequently seen and reported on Lena Ahrens Road, among others.

“At a meeting with UKZN staff and students, myself and the community in 2014 it was agreed that buses would not drive along Lena Ahrens and drop students in Clark or Lena Ahrens Roads, but rather use the bus route and security from the Camden residence would walk students back to the res to ensure safety. This has seemingly been disregarded,” she said.

She said she had received numerous complaints from residents regarding this issue.

“This matter needs to be addressed and a way forward sought. The bus routes need to be enforced. It is dangerous for students to be dropped off on the side of the street or at the intersection of Lena Ahrens and Clark, which often happens. Olympic are a big offender, but it seems even the city's buses no longer regard the bus routes,” she said.

EThekwini Head of Communications, Tozi Mthethwa saidthe City was not aware of the matter.

“Metro Police will investigate, monitor the situation and conduct route permit enforcements if investigations prove that there is an infringement,” she said.
