SERVICE delivery delays has flat residents in Morningsidés Ninth Avenue demanding that contractors return to resurface the road after new cables were laid in August.
Chutrapal Panday, a resident and supervisor at Beau Casa for the past 18 years, said he had made numerous attempts to both the municipal Road Department as well as Telkom to re-tar the stretch of road after the new cables were laid nearly four months ago.
“We saw the Telkom vans when they dug a trench across the road to lay the cables. A short while later the opposite side of the road was re-tarred but our side was left in a mess. We eventually managed to get a person from Telkom out to inspect the place on Friday and he said it was not their job,” the perplexed resident explained. He said the complex gardeners had to constantly cover the area with sand because the rain washed all the sand away, making it difficult for vehicles getting to and from the complex.
Gerald Anderson, another resident of Beau Casa, agreed that something should be done as a matter of urgency. “It is a huge inconvenience and extra wear and tear on our cars getting in and out of our driveway, as well as being an eyesore,” he added.
Both Panday and Anderson said the faded yellow lines on the busy road also added to their woes. “The yellow lines are not respected and people park all over the road illegally, now that they are so faded its a free for all,” Panday added, saying that the speed hump also needed a paint job.
After making enquiries, Ward councillor, Martin Meyer said the Road’s Department had received a requisition from Electricity Unit to embark on the re-tarring last month, but “due to the large volume of work currently at hand” were unable to complete the work. Meyer was advised arrangements were in hand to attend to the complaint as well as freshening of yellow lines before the festive period.
“I urge residents to report all concerns regarding roads and engineering to 080 13 13 013 or email eservices@dmws.durban.gov.za. You will then receive a reference number. If there has been no action within seven working days, you are then welcome to e-mail me, with your reference number at ward27@ethekwini.org to follow up,” Meyer said.
