High levels of ecoli force city pools closure

Durban beachfront central pools have been closed so they can be drained and cleaned.

ETHEKWINI Municipal paddling pools have been closed for emergency maintenance.

In a media release on Friday afternoon the city announced that paddling pools at the central beachfront had been closed for emergency work to be carried out.

According to the release, the heatwave conditions and high bather turnout over the festive season which saw a minimum of 9000 bathers using the paddling pools every day, resulted in the filtration system becoming affected causing high levels of ecoli in the water.
It was decided that in the best interest of bathers the pools needed to be drained, cleaned and all outlet pipings disinfected.
It is also necessary to clean the drainage system around the pools which is currently blocked and creating a “foul’ smell.
The cleaning of the pool is estimated to take around six days and two working days to refill the pool. Work will commence tomorrow (Saturday) 9 January. Bathers are encouraged to use any of the other nearby pools including Laguna beach pools and the South Beach paddling pools.

The city apologised for any inconvenience.
