Umbilo trespasser caught

“I encourage business owners to ensure that their alarms are maintained in order to make sure that everything is functioning properly."

A PRIVATE security officer has been praised for his quick response which led to the arrest of a suspected thief, who is now in police custody.

The Fidelity ADT Monitoring Centre recently received an alarm signal from a business based in Sydney Road and immediately dispatched armed response officer Innocent Fakude who arrived at the premises within minutes.

Fakude immediately conducted a perimeter check and soon spotted a suspect attempting to hide behind a wall. The suspect was successfully apprehended and handed over for arrest to members of the Umbilo SAPS.

Small businesses are often the target of criminals who meticulously plan their break-ins according to the business operating hours, vulnerable entry and exit points as well as security measures or the lack thereof.

“I encourage business owners to ensure that their alarms are maintained in order to make sure that everything is functioning properly. It is also important to conduct regular security assessments in order to resolve any vulnerable or unprotected areas to deter opportunistic criminals. Security technologies such as CCTV, outdoor beams and roof passives are most often used to proactively prevent crime,” said district manager for Fidelity ADT KwaZulu-Natal, Ivan Govender.

Govender commended the ARO for his quick response which ensured that a criminal has now been placed behind bars.

“Responding to industrial premises can be daunting as it is a large area to cover and investigate by an officer. We would therefore like to congratulate Fakude for his efforts in making the arrest and for handling the situation in such an excellent manner.”
