One mom has cracked the code of travelling with kids
Travelling with your little ones shouldn’t be such a daunting task, and one mom has cracked the code on how to make travelling with kids more doable and enjoyable.
THE idea of travelling is exciting just on its own – whether you are going to an exotic holiday destination or just going to see extended family you haven’t seen in a while, it is enough to make you beam with excitement at just being on the road or in the air.

But, for parents with small children, this same excitement also comes with anxiety of not knowing how you are going to make it to your destination with children who often get easily overwhelmed and relentlessly difficult on the way because of the hustle and bustle and change of environment.
Nomcebo Mokadi, a regulatory affairs specialist and mom with two boys under the age of five, has found a way to make travelling a little more bearable for the children and enjoyable for the whole family. Mokadi, who often has to commute between two provinces, has found easy ways to make it bearable on the road, and she shared her tips with us.
“I travel long distances with my kids often, and once they get tired of being strapped in their car seats, and the excitement of being in the car dies down, that’s when the screams and tantrums start. As we have spent more time on the road, though, I’ve picked up a few things that help me settle them down and make the journey more enjoyable,” said Mokadi.
Mokadi says she swears by these tips:
- Never travel alone with kids – always have another adult with you.
- They must pee before leaving the house else you’ll have to stop in the middle of nowhere for them to pee.
- Have plenty of snacks.
- Have a few breaks but one big break for a proper sit-down lunch – they’ll definitely sleep for long after this one.
- Don’t skimp on the air conditioner – it’ll help with heat restlessness for the kids – because opening the window doesn’t work well at times (especially at high speed).
- Have fun games – spot the animals, different trees, etc – teachable moments.
- Be patient. Don’t lose your temper or focus because kids will tempt you.
Holidays are a relaxing time, and getting to that destination you’ve been eyeing all year long shouldn’t be a stressful moment. While some things can’t be planned for, do stay prepared when travelling with your children.

“Bring their medications if they use any, have first aid essentials on hand, if you are going to places with extreme heat, bring their water bottles, and never forget the sunscreen! And, as much as screen time needs to be reduced and monitored, it can come in handy when it is used correctly with the right content, so don’t forget those chargers and headphones.
“While it is tempting to overpack when travelling with kids, don’t – it will add more unnecessary stress. Just bring the essentials. If they haven’t worn something in six months, they won’t wear it on holiday, so leave it at home,” added Mokadi.
